Infrared light is a wavelength on the spectrum of light that is just beyond the visible range for humans. These infrared LED illuminators function like light amplifiers for black and white surveillance cameras. Cameras aren't confined to the narrow set of wavelengths of light that human eyes are. By giving your black and white surveillance camera illuminator night vision with an IR illuminator you supply the light it needs to see in lighting conditions that people would consider total darkness.

In some spots it might be impractical, illegal or just plain rude to have bright lights on outside of a building at night. In places like this, infrared illuminators are about as necessary as the cameras themselves. Should none of these conditions apply consider that the power usage of the lights you use can be a major factor in the cost of using your surveillance system at night.

The infrared LED illuminator that uses the most electricity only uses what a 25 watt lightbulb would use. This can save a lot of money on your elecric bill if you are lighting areas needlessly with higher wattage bulbs.
